The Norden 901 Expedition Edition (has 890 Adventure R suspension and some other tech features like quick shifter, heated grips, heated seat) or the Africa Twin Standard Manual. I ride 10,000-12,000 miles a year commuting and grocery getting.
The KTM 790 Adventure R is an incredible bike. Itâs a bike that we could all be looking back on in 20 years time, with fond memories. Between that, the T700, the 1250 GS and the incumbent Africa Twin weâve not been more spoilt for good adventure style bikes. âIt wants to be pushed, ridden hard and to make your eyes water with excitement.â
This gives the KTM twin a 75-degree firing order, which gives the 790 a familiar KTM sound and feel because thatâs the same firing order as the firmâs 75-degree V-twins. KTM claims the engine produces 94 horsepower and 66 ft-lb of torque, which is right on par with the 790âs principal competitors, the Honda Africa Twin and the BMW F850GS.

And now the better news. The 790 is a lot of fun to ride and it offers on the fly adjustment to the ABS and traction control. They told me to get a dongle as well to make the bike ârememberâ those settings after switching the ignition off and back on. But when they installed it, it didnât work.

We've been going adventure mad here at Cycle News recently, so we thought we'd grab the two best bikes on the market today and throw them head to head in the KTM 790 Adventure R and the Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin. These are the pick of the crop right now, and the Honda has won every ADV test we've put it
0IxH. The 790 is the first full-blown Adventure Bike to come along to approximate the compactness of my beloved 990 SMT. The 790 makes at least the same power as the Africa Twin, with significantly less weight and bulk. But it still makes about 20 HP less than my SMT, which is about the same weight.
The KTM 790 Adventure S is a mid-sized adventure motorcycle that uses the same LC8 799c parallel-twin engine used in the 790 Duke but with a revised mapping. It peaks at 95 hp at 8,000 rpm and 65ft/lb torque at 6,500 rpm which is almost the same as that of the BMW F850GS or the Honda Africa Twin.

Other notable pricing for 2019: 690 Enduro R: $11,699. 1090 Adventure R: $14,999. 1290 Super Adventure R: $18,499 It's no surprise to most that the 790 Adventure R price ended up landing just between the 1090 Adventure R ($1,500 Less) and the new 690 Enduro R ($1,800 More).

The 790 (and I imagine the 890) is the polar opposite. I hear the 890 has improved bottom compared to the 790 but they are both designed to come alive at higher RPMs. One of two things will happen if you go with the KTM.
